The look of our ears is the complimenery frame of our face. The most commonly issue we encounter with ears is detached ears. This is caused by weaker cartriladge, which does not fully form the curves in the ears; it usually has a genetic cause
Although it shows differences in cultures, in our days it is a cause for children to be mocked at school, wheras in Japan it is concidered a cute aspect. This proceedure is highly demanded by male patients, as women can hide their ears with long hair
Other ear operations are done to those wearing heavy earings where the ears sag and rip in time. Some other operations are to correct brith defects or accidents by harvesting cartriladge from the body to create earlobes.
Why does it happen? Detached ears are herieditary or in some cases, the oestrogen levels during preganancy causes the cartriladge to be softer, thus post birth, with the contraction of facial skin, to become detached.
When can the operation be done? The recommended age is 2 to 3 weeks after birth to use appropriate bandages with doctor supervision. It has a high level of success and prevents surgery at a later age.
For those who do not respond to bandadges or have not received this treatment, the recommended agw for surgery is at 6 years of age, prior to starting school as ears complete their formations by the age of 5.
Can adults be operated? Yes, adults can be operated at any age without any risks.
What are the benefits? As the ears forms are corrected to a suitable level of the person, it enhances their appeareance, thus boosting their self esteem.
Parental duties If you notice this case in your child, pluease consult your doctor, especially if your child is at the age of school as peer teasing can affect their levels of success, please look for signs such as lower grades, unwillingness to go to school etc. If your child voices his or her concern, please pay attention as it may affect their scholastic and social success. If your child does not want to be operated, they should not be forced.
How is it done? This proceedure is a simple and low risk operation, which can be done with loca lor general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s age which does not require hospital stay. The doctor may select the proceedure to be done from the front or the back of the ears, depending on the needs.
Operations lasts up to 90 minutes and an ear band must be worn for about 2 weeks. Healing will be complete in about 2 weeks and the insicions will not be visible and it does not affect hearing. Other corrective operations can easily be done with local anesthesia. With the ear shape correction, many side effects, like psychological and physical mishaps are corrected and avoided.
